The City of Tayabas, Quezon (Filipino: Lungsod ng Tayabas) is a component city in the province of Quezon,
Philippines. It was once the capital of the province. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of
70,985 people in 15,155 households. Tayabas is known for lambanog (coconut wine) and sweet
food/delicacies, as well as resorts.
Tayabas was once the capital town of Tayabas province (today's Quezon
province) from 1605 until 1901. Its elegant church was started to be built
in 1744, enlarged in 1856, and improved in 1894. The church is said to be
one of the most beautiful in the Philippines. This shot was taken from the
window of the Casa de Comunidad that was built in 1831 as a guest house
for visiting dignitaries of the Spanish colonial government. The Casa is
the biggest "Bahay na Bato" to be restored by the National Historical
Institute and now serves as a museum and library
Tayabas has a total land area of 23,095 hectares divided
among its 66 barangays, 19 of which are within the
Poblacion; 47 classified as rural with respective areas
ranging from a mere 10 hectares to an enormous 3,002.41
hectares. The compact urban core measures only 82.15
hectares which is less than one (1) percent of the total
land area.
There are three identified large scale
manufacturing/processing industries in Tayabas. These are
the Arcoco Mill, New Tayabas Coco Oil Mill and Guanzon
Lime Dev. Co. Inc. As the names imply, the two milling
enterprises are coco based. However, the Guanzon Lime
Dev. Co. Inc. generate their product with mineral found at
the town. Furthermore, a historically and culturally
significant economic activity that supports a popular
demand both within and outside the town is the coconut
wine industry. Lambanog, this local drink is presently being
manufactured on a commercial scale. However, there are
other distillers who export this product abroad. The
Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in collaboration with
the LGU is organizing not only the local distillers but also
distillers of Quezon Province.
